This extended episode of Social Media Church with Vince Marotte covers considerable new ground. Vince Marotte is the Internet Pastor at Gateway Church (Austin, Texas) and authored an e-book titled “Context and Voice: communication design in our new media culture.” Vince unpacks his church’s online ministry philosophy, its integration of various technologies for a customized experience, and his rethinking new forms of church that’s contextualized in an Internet-connected culture.

  1. Thanks for having me on the podcast! I had a blast

  2. This was a great podcast, lots to think about. I’m going to check out nextdoor. My wife and I are a Cares Team with Apartment Life so this tool could be great for us.

If I were thinking of church planting I would consider a 100% online model. Hire an web developer rather than a worship leader. Create community platforms and encourage people to gather in their communities to participate. How close are we to this?

    • Online only?

I think what we are going to see is churches that only serve content and then allow the community that gathers around that content determine how to take care of each other in the way that we used to ‘hire’ the church to; small group formation, counseling, events etc.

Both the content and the organization will be handled on the web. I’d like to see a church that only gathers at a place and time maybe 20 times per year.

      • I could see groups forming, similar to the group in Branson. Depending on their level of knowledge or spiritual development there could be different type teaching to fit the individual need. It can be a different modality of learning.

I work in higher education where we are starting to see some of these shifts in learning. Organizations like Kahn Academy and TED-Ed are offering self guided study. There are MOOCs where 1000′s of people around the country are engaging and processing through course content together from around the world. Even Harvard and MIT will be offering online courses through EdX. I’m not sure if 1 model will work beter than the others, but they are searching for new way to deliver content and educate.

Currently online churches are an extension of a local church. If someone were brave enough it could be a standalone function.
